"When Vice UK asked for a submission, I knew I had to share the sound that can only be found right here in my home state of Texas. I am fortunate to live in a place where so many of my peers are creating the kind of music I love. When most kids are worrying about how the grass is greener elsewhere, these bands are working hard to make where they are where they want to be. This mix is made up of current Texas synth-based projects and covers many genres, from industrial EBM to techno, leftfield disco to electro, deep house to minimal wave and even a little screwgaze for good measure.

I am grateful to all groups who were so kind to contribute to this compilation; special thanks to Klearlight Studios for helping master the final mix as well as producing several of the bands in it. I’d also like to thank Answering Machine Records for their submissions as well as their continued output of quality Texas synth music. I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for all my creative friends across this big state.

There is something sacred in the geometry connecting Houston, Austin, and Dallas - this love triangle that we’re all a part of. This mix is a testament to what friends and neighbours are capable of and it’s a fitting time capsule for this time and place. Don’t Mess with Texas."

On March 18th, join Son del Valle for two films exploring the history, music and culture of son jarocho, the traditional campesino music from Veracruz, Mexico that has resisted the threat of extinction caused by corporate globalization. In the face of this threat, jarocho communities have joined together to spread the traditional practices and values of the fandango, not only to preserve the rural tradition, but to overcome and thrive.

About the films:

Fandango, Searching for the White Monkey weaves together the stories of musicians as they struggle to revive a dying tradition of Veracruz, Mexico. This musical documentary takes us from California's inner city to the heart of the Veracruz savannah, the cradle of the son Jarocho. Fandango, featuring rare footage spanning 25 years, is the story of personal transformation and the power of culture.

La Familia Raices is a short documentary on the family and Son Jarocho banda Grupo Raices from Oaxaca. The Raices Family play traditional Son Jaracho music in support of the Oaxacan people’s social movement. This traditional Afro-indigenous music originates in the state of Veracruz and is also traditionally played in some parts of the state of Oaxaca. This musical tradition is based upon popular education, collective organizing, and long term self determination for its musicians and instrument makers. The Raices family breaks through the difficulties faced by any family, with music, resistance, and determination.

There is a $3 - $5 suggested donation. All proceeds will go toward the RGV participating in the Farmworker Freedom March this April 16-18.

Ashanti A. Omowali at UTPA

Ashanti Alston Omowali is an anarchist activist, speaker, and writer, and former member of the Black Panther Party. He was also a member of the Black Liberation Army, and spent more than a decade in prison after government forces captured him (and the official court system convicted him) of armed robbery.

Ashanti is a former northeast coordinator for Critical Resistance, currently co-chair of the National Jericho Movement (to free U.S. political prisoners), a member of pro-Zapatista people-of-color U.S.-based Estación Libre, and is on the board of the Institute for Anarchist Studies.

Ashanti will be making his premiere at the University of Texas Pan American where he will give an in depth discussion on Race, Cross-Border Struggles and Anarchism.

Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) is a national network of students and youth organizing with farmworkers to eliminate sweatshop conditions and modern-day slavery in the fields. We work in alliance with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a membership-led organization of mostly Latino, Haitian, and Mayan Indian farmworkers and other low-wage workers based in Southwest Florida. We understand our work - which formally began in 2000 - as part of larger movements for economic and social justice. Youth in the RGV have been organizing with the SFA since 2005.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is an internationally recognized, award-winning farmworker organization based in southern Florida. It has assisted the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI in successfully investigating and prosecuting cases of modern-day slavery and it has been recognized with the 2007 Anti-Slavery International Award and the 2003 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award.

it's that time of the month again!

The lineup is indeed more rougher from the last artwalk. It will be Conquest of Breads 1st official public appearance/show. They consists of members from Avocado hand grenade and Kegparty!. C.O.B. sound a lot like early anarcho-crust coming out of the late 80's and early 90's and draw their influences from antischism and propaghandi. Their sound is epic and harmoniously exacerbated. Expect to see a lot more coming from this band in the near future!

Tentacles will also be making their 1st appearance. Though they have been playing for a fair amount of time, their sound is breathtaking nonetheless. They are largely influenced and sound like mid 90's hardcore bands such as pg. 99, gallows holier than the cross, shikari and bands from the robotic empire label. Heavy!

I stumbled upon Drew Hoffman through a friend of mine and have yet to hear him play live. Although, from hearing his mp3's I can say his music sounds straight up like melodic acoustic. We'll see what's up!

TEJANO BOUNCE - EVERY SUNDAY

For those of you that are wasted from the weekend, well let's just say you're going to have to get off your ass and make another night of it!

His myspace is pretty outdated but we should expect to see him back on the rise considering these amazing tracks he sent us. Ilegal are from Montreal, Quebec CANADA. Simon from Bombs Away(Canada) and Funeral(Pdx) plays guitar and a member of Selfish/Kykloopien Sukupuutto(Finland) plays drums. Their style is raw punk/fast hardcore while singing in Spanish. Not too sure what their influences are but they sound pretty good. Look out for the new recordings on Todo Destruido and Lengua Armada soon.

Order - "Kombinat"
This cassette compiles their last two available 7"'s. What I mean by that is that their last 7", Donki, was not available for sale. Leave it to the Japanese to pull this kind of stunt. Eddie and I just recently had a conversation about this sort of thing. Anyways, Both these REAL 7"'s are sold out as is this tape that compiles both releases. Order play Japanese Punk like you've never heard it before with great hooks and lots of sing-a-long parts. I couldn't compare them to any other band. Maybe because i only know 15% of the Japanese (PUNK) bands. Too poor to know the rest.

Dead Noise - "Noize Violence"
This band is good if you've never heard CONFUSE. Since I'm familiar with the latter, this band is alright. I like their attempt at mimicking CONFUSE's whiny vocals on some songs, although not quite getting it right. The band name might suggest to you the type of music they play because they "borrow" the name from a LEBENDEN TOTEN E.p.; They sound more crust to me than noisy. This is only the demo so there might be an improvement in the 7" sound. I'll play that later.

This band is from Spain and play D-Beat influenced hardcore. I cannot help but eat it all up. From the art, lyrics, and music, this cassette is punk as fuck!! It even includes a supplemental booklet. As i began relaxing listening to this, a familiar tune invaded my eardrums. Semen have gone ahead and covered DESTRUCCION's "Makineros Hijos De Puta". I have no gripes or complaints about this because DESTRUCCION play the D-Beat perfectly. Normally, it is unusual for a new band to cover a recent bands material, but in this case, it is understandable. Solo para punks.

I'm not one to promote events at clubs unless I feel the music is worthy or the whole idea behind the "party" is reasonable. I definitely could not give up or ignore this show mostly because the people throwing it are awesome and I've been following dubbel dutchs' productions for quite awhile. Dubbel dutch is an amazing producer when it comes to tech-house, fidget or house music in general! Whenever I hear his remixes, the dude seems to nail the song on the spot with whatever genre or sound he aims for. Also not to forget to note the headliner, Adam Bozzetto who is also an incredible producer of fidget-house. Of course the genre is terrible now because of many under-produced cheesy followers who tried to make the sound more improved and failed aimlessly. Although, you can't leave out the ones who were successful in their time and effort of making the songs original and appealing. Adam Bozzetto is definitely one of them.

HUMAN FREQUENCIES - BROKE SUMMER

The summer is a broke nig. Shit has been hitting the fan both good and bad for me, and others or so it seems. The change of seasons has made the valley ridiculously hot. Nocturnal over diurnal has taken over my life. Normally I am not in the valley during the summer but the rope has brought me back and I've thankfully been loosened from it. I am as free as can be.

Gosh, I can't even began to describe how excited I am for this show. It's about time bands from Monterrey make it out to the valley. You would think living so close to Monterrey there would be bands frequently coming this route but no not really.

Fuck the border for making these restrictions. There are so many great bands from Mexico and South America that I would love to see play here. Most of them can't due to visa problems, financial situations and/or border customs. If they see bands with so many instruments they assume they are coming to profit off of shows but that isn't what it's about. They don't understand our collective culture and its frugality. FUCK THEM!

On with the subject!

Margaritos is a 4-piece trashy punk band. I think of mutants playing fast punk with a bit of r'n'r style guitar and drums that sound like trash cans being beaten. Drunk vocals to get you and your friends dancing and actin' a fool!

Ratas del Vaticano are a 4-piece as well described as being "scabby art-punk". They've got a psychedelic sound as well going on which is getting pretty common these days but still interesting to see what they can do with it.

You should be familiar with the locals playing and if not then read a couple of posts ahead ;p

This show should definitely get your summer started well. I saw these guys last year at chaos in tejas under a different name and they were for sure one of the best bands that played the fest. They're previous name was Invasion and now they are Destino final. There was quite a few line-up changes in the band but they still have the same sound and some of the same original members.

What stands out about this band is their innovative style(which you might think isn't so innovative, but in the punk world it is ;p) of reverb on the vocals. The guitar and drums are pretty basic(fast, repetitive and thrashy). If anything I think their live performance will strike you pretty well. They know how to release energy into the crowd with their LOUD NOISE and performance.

Also not to forget, these guys have really tripped out artwork. It's great to see bands not only focusing their feelings in music but art as well.

I've noticed a lot of clocks in their artwork which could be symbolic of something?

Just a reminder that this blog is here to help anyone and anything mostly but not limited to folks from the Rio grande valley. I know that I haven't exposed this blog entirely in ways that I know I could but only because i'm shy and don't feel nearly as educated as other people and my lack of an elusive vocabulary makes me really discouraged. -_-

Also, laziness accounts for the majority of me not writing alot. haha.

Now to the main reason for this post. I've been hanging around the diy house scene a lot these days and in fact i'm supposed to be writing a paper about it but instead i'm writing in here because I feel this is more important. Now to all of you punk heads who know me - I am not selling out, I still have all my punk records sitting in my house and I still listen to punk. I just need a record player. LOL. Anyway, I don't think I can even put into words how house music has inspired me and just helped me relax and try to get rid of my angsty self. Not only house music in general but the people who showed me it, my friends who play it and are great at it. I thank them so much for introducing it to me.

Here is a really impressive mixtape from one of my great friends since elementary, Dj Flux. He has become an incredible and influential dj to many people in the valley and mixes a variety of tech-house, fidget, minimal and techno. This mixtape is so intense it gives me the chills and that feeling when your body tingles through your arms and stomach. CHI-TOWN INVADES THE VALLEY ONCE AGAIN!!!

It's great to see bands from the mid-east coming through the valley because not that many of them do. I had seen this bands name around before and I was expecting something more thrashy and modern-sounding but they are completely different from what I expected.

These guys caught my attention right away once I heard the catchy basslines, guitar reverb, and new wave sound I rarely hear coming out of punk bands these days. They remind me of punk coming out of the mid 70's through late 80's. Really interesting because they take you to whole other level of punk.

Check out their influences on myspace and you'll understand where they come from. I recommend everyone get really high before seeing them play. You'll enjoy it ; p

I've been hearing people complain about when the next "real punk show" is gonna be rather than a stupid crust punx show with a bunch of hippies. Well, you all don't need to cry or complain anymore because finally there is gonna be a "real punk band" headlining a valley show. If you are from texas and don't know who the krum bums are get the fck out! Anyway, these guys aren't really my style but I would recommend them to anyone into street punk or just straight up hardcore punk. Some of their vocals and riffs sound kind of crusty/thrashy so I guess you can say they aren't that bad.

Straight outta Goldcoast in Queensland, Australia comes Wongo. I don't think I need to explain the way he sounds since I think his name sais it all but I will nonetheless. Wongo is a f'n sick ass producer that creates an incredible fidget sound with jackin beats and nasty wobbly basslines. He uses articulate samples making your ears beg for more.

This will be wongo's b-day the day of the show so make sure you wish him a happy birthday and show him the valley knows how to party.

They are of course not as good as any of those bands because I said so but yeah they are worth checking out because I said so again. Just imagine a fast distorted sloppy hardcore pop punk band and you'll understand how they sound. WTF? Fuck sub genres, seriously. It makes everything so complicated. Hardcore punk, okay? Got it? Alright!

My friend David and some other kids from Brownsville started this diy record label called, Black Shit Noise Productions. Very interesting since there aren't really any distro/labels down here aside from Valle Miseria Diskos, Muerte Negra Discos, & Night Terror Records. If anyone is into noisy/thrashy stuff with punk & metal influence then you should keep up to date with the label because they are releasing some pretty brutal stuff.

Etacarinae from spain/portugal will be hitting up the rio grande valley(mcallen) . They are described as being melodic and heavy sounding which I just heard and they are. I'm not too into the repetitive riffs, breakdowns and emotional screams but i'll definately give these guys a chance since they aren't horrible. But yeah, they are pretty much a crossover of tragedy and his hero is gone for those of you who want to check out bands that sound similar. If you all are really into it there is a band called Antimaster from Mexico City. They played in Matamoros not so long ago and I was able to see them with Pisschrist I think. namedrop, woops. ;x haha you'll like them also if you're really into this genre. okay see you guys there. i'll try not to make it late this time. byeeeeeeeeeeee!

December 2, 2008 - Subway, the third largest fast-food chain in the world and the biggest fast-food buyer of Florida tomatoes, reached an agreement this morning with the CIW to help improve wages and working conditions for the workers who pick their tomatoes! Terms of the agreement include a supplier code of conduct that requires farmworker participation in monitoring growers' compliance, zero tolerance for serious labor rights violations, and a penny-per-pound wage increase for the campesin@s. Radical folks & friends from Brownsville who are apart of the Comedy Club have organized to bring down documentarian, Nick Cooper to show his film "Soma". The film is about a form of therapy incorporating politics of anarchism and a way of fighting the physiological effects of authoritarianism through Soma. This sounds too awesome! The idea of fighting hierarchy through a therapeutic sense sounds too pimp.

He made the label to help out his friends from Monterrey, Mexico put out punk jamz on vinyl. If you all aren't aware there is an economic crisis(more intense than the U.S. I would imagine) going on in Mexico, Central and South-America and these bands can not afford to put their records out individually. Thankfully, Enock and other labels are collectively working together to help these bands put their music out. Without the solidarity of other labels and Enock, these bands would not be able to afford to put their music out.

The Student/Farmworker Alliance of the RGV will be having an SFA MiniEncuentro this Saturday, Oct 18 from noon to 5pm. Alright, So I know since the D.S.B. show got canceled you all might think this is totally bogus and fake. I've checked deskonocidos myspace and they've got it marked under their calender so I'm gonna take their word on it. For those of you who are not familiar with Inepsy and Lebenden toten let me give you the the quick low down.

Inepsy are basically legendary crustys who have an extremely similar riff-rock sound to the almighty famous, Motorhead. Inepsy can be described as perfecting hardcore punk by blending it with a bit of crust and combining components of Discharge/Motorhead.

All in all you've got flower-pretty solos that grab you by the neck and slap you, the echoed chants and screams that sound like Lemmy of Motorhead and f'n fast sweet drum beats that go along perfectly with the sound.

Hands down my favorite band of whatever genre you wanna call them.

Now i'm not too familiar with lebenden toten because i've only heard their 8 tracks demo and probably only played it about 3 times. Anyway, they are a female fronted anarcho band from portland, oregon with members of atrocious madness. Need I repeat myself? Yes, FEMALE FRONTED! Their name translates to "living dead".

I've always been a sucker for female vocals because the screams always sound so intense/clear and females always do it best in my opinion.Lebenden toten's sound is super distorted with blast beats all over the place, on-beat raging vocals, and lots of feedback.

I'm more than sure Inepsy and Lebenden toten will never come back down again so all you punx take advantage of this because it is gonna be the best show to ever happen in the valley. THE BEST!
